The Wallin Scholarships were instituted in 1991 by Maxine and Winston Wallin at South High School, Minneapolis, and were extended to all Minneapolis Public High Schools in 2000. In 2007, the program expanded to include graduates of Anoka-Hennepin and, in 2008, a pilot program will extend to St. Paul Public Schools.

The scholarship program continues to evolve with the addition in 2002 of the Eric and Cornwell scholarships, the McCary and Junior League of Minneapolis Young Women's scholarships in 2003, and the addition of the Holman and Excel Bank scholarships in 2004. Each year the program success is evaluated and changes are made accordingly.

Over 2000 scholarships have been awarded to date, and approximately 700 scholars are currently enrolled in college.

Scholarships awarded in 2008 will generally be in the amount of $4,000 per year, or $16,000 for four years. In addition, each student is assigned an advisor as part of the scholarship package and benefits from their continued encouragement, guidance and support. Another important component of the program connects students with the appropriate resources and support personnel on their college or university campus.
